bridging
research and real-
world impact

Chevron Studio offers entrepreneurs a chance to learn about lower carbon energy technologies from Israel's universities, national labs, colleges, and academic institutions, and turn them into thriving startup companies through three phases of the technology acceleration program, which offers support for researchers and institutions, giving them the chance to scale up innovative technologies or present their own proprietary technology through partnership with entrepreneurs.

Chevron Studio in Israel is a collaboration between Chevron Technology Ventures (CTV) & Chevron Mediterranean Limited, and EnergyCom, and is endorsed by Israel's Ministry of Energy.

This initiative provides funding to bridge the gap between innovative applied research and real-world uses. Chevron Studio operates in Israel and the United States. For more information on our US-based program, please click here.

phase 2

scale-up

12-24 Months

Entrepreneurs selected after completion of the Discovery Phase will form companies (if not already formed) and work with their Technology Partner institutions to scale up and demonstrate these technologies at a minimum viable commercial scale or Minimum Viable Product (MVP).

Researchers and/or institutes which have relevant research or provisional applications can apply to the program. Chevron Studio will periodically call for applicants in focus areas of the program. Once selected, we will work with the research holder to identify the entrepreneur to lead the process.

Clarity?

How does Chevron Studio work?

Chevron Studio is built on a 3-phase program: Discovery, Scale-Up & Field Trial. In each phase, the team receives guidance and funds in order to establish a designated company, develop and commercialize the technology.

Cohorts are selected up to twice a year to join a Chevron Studio. During the program there are three phases. In the Discovery Phase, entrepreneurs write business commercialization and scale-up plans around the technologies they chose from the curated list of researches. If selected to continue in the program, entrepreneurs form a company and receive funding in the Scale-Up Phase, with the possibility for further funding in the final Field Trial Phase.

What's in it for me?

Chevron Studio provides entrepreneurs with the unique opportunity to locate on-shelf researches and quickly build a company around researches developed at national labs and universities. This includes the opportunity to:

  • Work with leading Israeli scientists and technologists
  • Hone entrepreneurial skills through evaluating and de-risking cutting-edge technologies
  • Develop business acumen
  • Demonstrate your ability to scale up and commercialize technologies
  • Develop a wide network of technical and commercial subject matter experts within the innovation ecosystem funding
  • Get funded
What are Chevron's objectives?

Chevron believes that it will take multiple technology solutions to meet the global energy needs. This will take the utilization of commercial technologies, but also requires new technologies that do not exist at this time.

Chevron does not seek to own the research and does not want exclusive rights - as part of the process (on phase 2), entrepreneurs will sign a SAFE agreement, which will enable Chevron to own equity in the new startup company.

How long does the program take?

Phase 1: Discovery - 4 months
Phase 2: Scale-Up - 12-24 months
Phase 3: Field Trial - 24-36 months

Who can apply?

Experienced or aspiring entrepreneurs or researchers and research institutions

How are the awardees selected?

A committee comprising Chevron, EnergyCom, and the Ministry of Energy will evaluate the requests and make recommendations to Chevron's team

The finance support is extremely helpful. What if I need extra funding amounts?

Companies established within the Chevron Studio may request additional funding to support field trials, on top of the 3 phase funding. Furthermore, Chevron Studio welcomes external fundraising efforts — entrepreneurs and companies can pursue independent funding opportunities. Chevron Studio will assist with such efforts wherever possible.

What stage of research is applicable?

Chevron Studio accepts technologies with a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) between 2 and 6 for application.

  • TRL 2-3: Early-stage research with a clear concept and supporting analysis.
  • TRL 4-6: Demonstrated feasibility and validation in a lab or relevant environment.

The primary criterion is that the research should have the potential to scale to a prototype within approximately two years. This ensures alignment with Chevron Studio's goal of accelerating promising innovations toward practical deployment.

What is the financial support during the program?

Chevron Studio supports entrepreneurs based on the 3-phase program with up to $525,000. Discovery: $25,000; Scale Up $250,000 ($125,000 of it part of a SAFE agreement); Field Trial $200,000. Extra funding for the field trial can be considered.

Who owns the Intellectual Property?

Chevron Studio does not intend to assume ownership of the Intellectual Property — it remains with the new company and its technology partners.
